about

After releasing their nine-track debut album in the spring of 2008, Buddy McNeil & The Magic Mirrors are back from the grave with a brand-new EP, Help Me Mama! (now available on CD and vinyl). The four tracks—including the title cut, the first release from their new LP coming in September 2010— pay homage to the rock 'n' roll of the 1950s and 1960s, in particular the era's three lost greats, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, killed in a plane crash 51 years ago.

Drawing inspiration from gospel singing by church choirs, the band kicks things off with the catchy, propulsive Help Me Mama!, before breaking out the trumpet and trombone and getting hips shaking to the hot rhythms of Cry, Cry, Cry, a reworking of the Ritchie Valens tune in the style of his smash hit La Bamba. In Maybe Baby, the group retains the melodic genius of the uniquely charismatic Buddy Holly while performing an ethereal, atmospheric, even Onoesque interpretation of the song. Finally, things get a little strange—a term mentioned more than once in reference to The Big Bopper and the world of his hit The Purple People Eater—with a dissonant rendition of Teenage Moon featuring the eerie sounds of the musical saw, courtesy of guest musician Robbie Kuster
(Patrick Watson).

about

Buddy McNeil and the Magic Mirrors Montréal, Québec

Buddy McNeil & the Magic Mirrors are the offspring of a passionate love affair between the past and the present. The rawness of the new garage explosion, the playful pop of the 50s and the decadent sound of the 60s runs through their veins, and they're gonna give it their all as night turns to day.
